Family, Heart, Sun, Opóka
and Amalia Mavrič
For generations, our family has crafted wines with deep love, extensive knowledge and a discerning appreciation for quality. The Mavrič estate has been family-owned since 1829. From our humble beginnings to our current status as a recognised name in the wine industry, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to nature, the environment, excellence, and family values.
We take great pride in the fact that our wine cellar is an integral part of the rich tapestry of global wine culture. There is no beverage in the world produced with the same level of enthusiasm, emotion, and expertise as wine, a craft that has been honed over millennia.
Our journey began in 1829 when our dear ancestor, nona Amalija Mavrič renovated the wine cellar using a dowry from the Batistič de Rothenfeld Pelikan family fund (or. Batisttig de Rothenfeld Pelican). She also acquired the majority of the land in Šlovrenc and its surrounding areas.
In 2024, we made a significant change as a mark of respect and appreciation by renaming our wine cellar and all our wines accordingly. Prior to this, we operated under the names Mavrič or Jožko Mavrič or Luka Mavrič. The rebranding to Amalia Mavrič allowed us to unify our wine labels, significantly enhancing their visibility in the marketplace.
Before Anton Mavrič assumed management of the estate over half a century ago, the family primarily relied on viticulture and fruit farming. Under Yugoslav rule, we opted against handing over our vineyards and land to the socialist cooperatives, preserving our independence as private landowners.
Consequently, as private individuals, we were regularly restricted and had no choice but to send our grapes to the cooperative cellar. At the time, only enough grapes were kept to produce barely two barrels of wine, which was not bottled but reserved for personal use, shared with family and friends. With Slovenia's independence came new opportunities. Each year, more grapes—and thus more wine—were retained for personal use. We have since become fully independent, while continuing to take pride in contributing to the collective brand of wines from Goriška brda.
In the 1980s, Jožko Mavrič significantly took our wine production to the next level by introducing bottling. At first, we lacked a distinctive brand, but as he attended wine fairs and expanded sales to Ljubljana, we gradually established one. By 1992, in Slovenia’s first year of independence, our winery had become well established, securing its place on the Slovenian wine map. Today, we produce approximately 90,000 litres of wine annually, with 30,000 litres of the highest quality reserved for bottling.
Luka Mavrič has recently assumed responsibility for managing both the wine cellar and the brand. Luka, his father Jožko and his grandfather Anton make key decisions concerning vineyard operations and cellar processes. With his youthful innovation, modern expertise and energetic approach, Luka has helped elevate the quality of wines produced under the family brand, AMALIA MAVRIČ, to even greater heights.
